New award to honor researchers

Vice Provost for Research James A. Roberts has announced the creation of the KU Research Achievement Award. The award will be presented each year to honor an outstanding academic staff researcher from KU's Lawrence campus. The award consists of $10,000 (on deposit at the KU Center for Research) and a plaque honoring the achievement. The funds may be spent over five years for research materials, salary, matching funds, equipment, travel, research assistants or any other purpose that is consonant with the advancement of the individual's research program. A committee appointed by the vice provost for research will evaluate all nominations. Upon recommendation by the vice provost for research, the provost will select each year's award winner.

The nomination deadline is Oct. 6. The award will be presented in recognition of outstanding research achievement to an academic staff researcher working in the categories of basic and applied research.

  • Only individuals who are appointed as full time academic staff researchers working within a KU Lawrence campus academic department or research center are eligible for the award.
  • The individual's research should be characterized as having significant influence in his or her field and/or as representing a productive record of important research that has expanded intellectual or societal insights.
  • A substantial portion of the work for which the award is given must have been done at KU.

Nominations must include the following information: A one page letter of recommendation outlining the accomplishments of the nominee. The letter should detail the nominee's contribution to his or her field. The panel that will review the nominations is made up of researchers from across the academic spectrum.

NOTABLE ALUMS

Navy Rear Admiral Mark Heinrich recently took command of the Defense Supply Center in Richmond, Va., the primary source for nearly 1.25 million repair parts and operating supply items supporting 1,300 major weapons systems. Heinrich holds a master's degree in business administration and a master's of science degree in petroleum management from KU.
