Grunewald among hall of fame's inaugural class

Gary Grunewald

Gary Grunewald, professor of medicinal chemistry, has been named a founding member of the hall of fame of the American Chemical Society, Division of Medicinal Chemistry. He is one of only three individuals to receive the honor.

The honor is given to members of the society's Division of Medicinal Chemistry who have made outstanding contributions to medicinal chemistry through research, teaching and service. Grunewald and his fellow inductees will be recognized at the society's fall meeting Sept. 13 in San Francisco.

Higuchi research awards given to four

The winners of four Higuchi/Endowment Association Research Achievement Awards have been announced. The winners will receive $10,000 to advance research efforts.

The awards were announced Sept. 7 at the annual faculty-staff convocation in Budig Hall. Chancellor Robert Hemenway will officially present the awards to the winners in November.

  • Michael H. Crawford, professor of anthropology, will receive the Balfour S. Jeffrey Award for achievement in the humanities and social sciences.
  • Craig Huneke, Henry J. Bischoff Professor of Mathematics, will be the recipient of the Olin K. Petefish Award for achievement in the basic sciences.
  • Gary Conrad, University Distinguished Professor of Biology at Kansas State University, will receive the Dolph Simons Award for achievement in the biological sciences.
  • James Shortridge, professor of geography, will receive the Irvin E. Youngberg Award for research achievement in the applied sciences.

Lichtenberg earns achievement award

Jim Lichtenberg, associate dean for graduate study and research in the School of Education and professor of psychology and research in education, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council of Counseling Psychology Training Programs at the American Psychological Association's convention Aug. 11 in New Orleans.

The award recognizes faculty who have distinguished themselves through significant, long-term service and contributions to education and training in counseling psychology.

Hanley wins B.F. Skinner award

Division 25 (Behavior Analysis) of the American Psychological Association awarded the prestigious B. F. Skinner Young Researcher Award to Gregory P. Hanley, associate professor of Applied Behavioral Science. The award was given at a ceremony held at the annual convention of the APA in New Orleans in August.

The B.F. Skinner award was established in 1994 and each year recognizes an international scholar who has made important contributions to the field of Behavior Analysis.

Dole Institute names fall semester fellows

The Dole Institute of Politics has named two former U.S. Senate staff members, Republican Scott Richardson and Democrat Ed Quick, as its Fellows for the fall semester. Both will teach weekly study groups focusing on the work of Congress, which will be free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.doleinstitute.org.

Head wins provost's award for leadership

John Head, professor of law, received the 2006 Provost's Award for Leadership in International Education at Convocation on September 7.

The award recognizes faculty on the Lawrence campus who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in strengthening KU's international dimension in such areas as curriculum development, study abroad programs, relationships with international partner institutions and collaboration with international colleagues in research and publications.

Head was recognized for his commitment to international education. He has been closely involved with student exchange programs in Turkey, Ireland, and England.

Head was the first law faculty member to mentor a Junior Faculty Development Program fellow. He has participated in faculty exchanges between KU and the University of Vienna and the University of Hong Kong. Head has helped with several legal education projects in Indonesia, resulting in publication of two books used by law schools throughout the country.
