Campus events scheduled to celebrate Constitution Day

Four events at KU this month will celebrate the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787. Congress enacted a law in 2004 requiring all educational institutions receiving federal funding to educate its students about the Constitution each year.

The following is a list of Constitution Day events:

September 18
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Dole Institute of Politics
"You Be the Judge"
G. Joseph Pierron, Jr., Kansas Court of Appeals
Judges of the Kansas Court of Appeals and the Kansas Bar Association have developed an education program called "You Be the Judge." Two recent U.S. Supreme Court cases of interest to students will be presented. High school students invited will play the parts of the litigants, lawyers and judges. They will vote on the cases and learn how the court actually decided.

September 18
1 p.m.
Wescoe Beach
"Constitution Day on Wescoe Beach"
The Preamble to the Constitution will be recited on Wescoe Beach. Leading the recitation will be Senior Vice Provost Kathleen McCluskey Fawcett, Student Body President Jason Boots and Student Body Vice-President Melissa Horen. Following the celebration, Elizabeth Berghout, carillonneur, will sound the bells from the Campanile.
Copies of the Preamble will be available at Wescoe Beach from student members of the Civic Engagement Council.

"Judicial Independence"

The program will feature a brief new video of Supreme Court Justices Sandra Day O’Connor, Stephen Breyer and Anthony Kennedy discussing judicial independence and its importance, followed by a panel discussion and debate on a variety of topics relating to judicial independence and the Constitution.

Constitution Day at Memorial Stadium (Pre-game)
KU fans are invited to recite the Preamble to the Constitution. The Preamble will be displayed on the giant video board in the stadium. Chancellor Robert Hemenway will lead the recitation while Elizabeth Berghout, carillonneur, rings the bells from the Campanile. Following the recitation, the Marching Jayhawks will play the national anthem.

KU IQ

Some might be surprised to find Jayhawks on ice. The KU Hockey Club team will take to the ice for its first game of the season Sept. 15. The team competes in Division II of the American Collegiate Hockey Association. For more 'Hawk hockey info, visit www.kuhockey.com.
