Parking commission to host public forum
The Parking Commission will hold a public hearing about parking on campus at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 26 in Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union.The purpose of the meeting is to hear comments on the Parking and Transit departmental policies, rules and fees. Individuals may speak at the meeting or send comments in writing to Margretta de Vries, the Parking Commission secretary.
General issues included in the comments will be summarized and shared at the hearing. Comments may also be e-mailed to kupark@ku.edu.
Unclassified Senate plans events, survey
This fall, Unclassified Senate is kicking off a series of events to help unclassified staff become aware of the many aspects of KU. Events include an inside look at admissions, the Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute, "Working in the KU Culture," a campus walking tour and cancer research. More information about the events is online at www.unclassifiedsenate.ku.edu.Unclassified Senate is also conducting a survey to find out what issues are important to unclassified staff. The survey should take less than five minutes to complete. The survey will be available until Oct. 27. All responses are confidential.
Results will be posted on the Unclassified Senate Web site.
Applications for annual Wheat State Tour being taken
Applications are now being accepted for the 10th installment of the Wheat State Whirlwind Tour.The 2007 tour dates are May 21 - 25. All expenses are covered by the university, but there is a charge for single occupancy rooms.
Faculty members have priority, although unclassified staff may apply. Applications are due by Dec. 1.
KU PowerPoint templates available
University Communications has posted a variety of KU-branded, customizable PowerPoint templates for faculty and staff to download.Instructions on how to add photos, charts and other features to presentations are also available online. Users can chose from several versions, such as the template with a Jayhawk or the new KU signature as well as designs focusing on campus beauty, student life and the medical center. University Relations graphic designer Mo Issa created the templates.
Officials discuss Canadian exchange
Officers in Texas branches of the Canadian Consulate General visited KU on Oct. 10 to explore the possibilities of academic exchanges with Canadian universities.Ashley Johnson, academic relations officer in the Canadian Consulate General in Houston and David Dix, consul and trade commissioner in the science and technology area of the Canadian Consulate General in Dallas, met with Engineering Dean Stuart Bell, Graduate School and International Programs Dean Diana Carlin, Interim Director of Indigenous Nations Studies Stacy Leeds, and French and Italian Department faculty, among others.
Phone directory copies available
Additional copies of the 2006-07 KU telephone directory are available at University Relations in the Wesley Building at 1314 Jayhawk Blvd., west of Kansas Union and behind Smith Hall. Hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.The directories are available for persons whose department did not receive enough copies. Retirees may also pick up a copy. The directories cannot be delivered by campus mail.
Earnhart to present Shutz Award lecture
Dietrich Earnhart, associate professor of economics and recipient of the 20th Byron T. Shutz Award for Distinguished Teaching, will present his Shutz Award lecture, "The Effects of Ownership Structure on Corporate Performance," at 5:30 p.m. Oct. 23 in Alderson Auditorium in the Kansas Union.Earnhart has a bachelor's from Yale University and holds doctoral degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
He has been a research fellow with the William Davidson Institute at the University of Michigan since 1999 and was a visiting scholar at the Prague School of Economics, Czech Republic, and at the Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education at Charles University, Prague.
International events hosted at KU
The Office of International Programs recently hosted a pair of events.The Midwest Association of Universities International had its semiannual meeting at KU on Oct. 4 and 5.
More than 200 area high school students attended the International Career Workshop on Oct. 4 to learn about international career possibilities in Kansas. Karyn Page, president and CEO of the Kansas World Trade Center, gave the keynote address.
Peace Corps will host annual information gala
The Peace Corps at KU will host its annual information gala on Oct. 25 in the Kansas Room on the sixth floor of the Kansas Union.The meeting will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. and is open to KU students and members of the public who are interested in learning more about the Peace Corps.
Denver regional recruiter Emily Farrell will show slides about Togo, where she served. Other returned volunteers will be present to answer questions. Refreshments will also be provided.
KU is ranked 18th among all U.S. colleges and universities for the number of currently serving Peace Corps volunteers, a number which has increased in the past three years.
