Retreat, vigil, tribute to highlight Veterans Day recognition

A Veterans Day ceremony featuring a candlelight vigil and retreat will be held Nov. 10. The Air Force, Army and Navy/Marine Reserve Officer Training Corps programs are working together to observe Veterans Day.

Events will begin with a formal retreat at the Strong Hall flagpole at 4 pm. Following the retreat, Col. (retired) Dorothy Kendrick, U.S. Marine Corps, will speak in 130 Budig Hall. After the speaker, there will be a lamp- lighting ceremony before a candle -light vigil, which begins at 7 pm. Four Cadets/Midshipmen will be posted at the Vietnam Memorial and the Korean Ware Memorial representing the various ROTC branches. This will be a 24-hour vigil with marching, depending on weather, and rotations every hour.

All of the Veterans Day ceremonies are open to the public.

ROTC cadets will join with the Dole Institute at 2 p.m. Nov. 10 in "A Tribute to Veterans," with guest speaker Buck Newsom, a retired Navy captain. A reception will follow the tribute. Both events will take place at the Institute.

The National Science Foundation recently released a report showing that from 1920 to 1999, 50 institutions have granted more than one-third of all doctoral degrees. KU is on the list at No. 36, with about 5,000. KU is just behind Princeton, Northwestern and the University of Pennsylvania on the list.
